The Potential Impact of New Solar Technology on Commercial Buildings

Impact of New Solar Technology on Commercial Buildings

We are one step closer to getting energy self-sufficient buildings all around the world. Olga Malinkiewicz, a Polish physicist and entrepreneur, has found a low-cost solution to making solar panels available to areas with little sunlight. Below we take a look at the potential impact of new solar technology on commercial buildings.

What Was Discovered?

Malinkiewicz found a way to coat solar panels with a substance called perovskite. This allows the solar panels to operate in a way that’s more cost-effective, more flexible, and more efficient. Perovskite is not a new substance; in fact, it has been here since the early 1800s. However, objects were only able to be coated by this substance in extremely hot temperatures – which made it high-cost and not as feasible. With Malinkiewicz’s new technology, objects can be coated in perovskite in colder temperatures as well as inside small labs.

A Worldwide Solution

The first commercial building to be equipped with this new solar technology is located in Warsaw, Poland. It is estimated that just a single panel is capable of powering an office for the entire day. The solar panels are expected to be slowly implemented into buildings around the world, with the next one being a hotel in Nagasaki, Japan. This means our office buildings in the United States could soon be powered with these sleek and cheap energy solutions.

A Step in the Right Direction

With commercial buildings reported to be responsible for nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, this new solar technology has the potential to make a significant difference. Solar panels are great for the environment because they derive clean, natural energy from the sun rather than fossil fuels. Fossil fuels must be burned to produce electricity, which emits harmful gases into the world. Through solar panels, we can use natural, renewable energy that is better for the environment and for our health.

If that didn’t serve as enough motivation to make this switch, solar panels can also save a business a great deal on electricity costs. It takes a lot of energy to power an entire office building, so you can imagine how much businesses can potentially save by adopting this technology.
